Great article on Salon today. It's not too long and touches on the incident with Oklahoma State player Marcus Smart, as well, as tying in the just-missed debacle of the Zimmerman/DMX boxing match.
We all want recognition as human beings. The
problem: Only one group can force its desires on the rest of us.
I read the article, and also heard about these incidents in the news. It is disappointing that after all this time, these things are still going on. I know that many people are moved to anger by racial slurs. For me personally, I try not to give any derogatory term the power of upsetting my emotions in such a way that causes me to physically react. Having said that, sometimes people just push your buttons, but they have to really persist or insult my kids to get a reaction from me. I was walking home from school once (alone/high school), and a car of white kids pulled up real slow, shot at me with a BB gun and yelled "ni**er" before speeding off. Thankfully, the BB hit the pocket of my jean jacket so no damage was done, and the situation could have been much worse, but I'm thankful it wasn't. I just remember thinking "what idiots." I can see the ignorance in it when it happens, and it makes me feel smarter for being able to recognize it as ignorance.
As for the DMX / Zimmerman fight, I'm glad it was canceled. I truly feel that no matter who had actually won the fight, it still would have been a lose-lose situation and an endorsement for venues of revenge. That is not what our country needs right now or ever.
